4 things that can damage your windshield over time

Automotive glass is designed to protect you in the case of a collision, but even the strongest windshields aren’t immune to wear and tear. It’s a good idea to keep your eye out for these four factors that can lead to windshield damage.

1. Road debris

Gravel and debris on the road can get kicked into the air by spinning tires and damage your windshield. The tiny chips they leave behind might not seem like a big deal but over time they can become cracks, which may then impair your visibility and compromise the structural integrity of the glass.

Small chips and cracks are often easy to get repaired. However, if you put off this task, they may worsen to the point where the entire windshield needs to be replaced.

2. Stormy weather

High winds can stir up a whole lot of trouble for your windshield. During storms, debris is blown about and branches can break and fall from trees. The damage storms inflict on your windshield can worsen with time, so parking your car inside during forecasted stormy weather can prevent a mishap.

3. Cold weather

Heat causes glass to expand, while cold causes it to retract. Unfortunately, exposure to warming-and-cooling cycles can worsen existing cracks in automotive glass. If you live in an area where there are extreme temperatures in winter, it’s recommended that you park your car indoors as much as you can.

Many strategies for clearing the ice and snow from windshields can lead to damage as well. Don’t be too heavy handed when using an ice scraper on your windshield. Scraping too hard can chip the glass, and small fractures may eventually develop into cracks.

4. Improper installation

If it’s not installed properly, a windshield’s lifespan will be significantly reduced. Glass that’s too loose will vibrate when you drive, which can cause it to crack. If you see or hear any vibrations coming from your windshield, get it inspected by a professional before it gets damaged.
