5 TIPS FOR PERFECT WINDOW PLACEMENT

Drilling for window placement

Well-placed windows can enhance a home’s views, ventilation, natural lighting and overall design. If you’re planning to renovate, here are a few tips to help you select the perfect window placement for your home.

1. Assess your surroundings

Design your window placement based on the scenery around your home. For example, it’s a good idea to use large picture windows to frame and highlight a beautiful view. However, if a particular part of your house has less pleasant scenery, consider orienting your windows away from these surroundings. If this isn’t possible, you can try placing them higher up on the walls or incorporating several smaller windows to break up the view.

2. Consider ventilation

Proper ventilation can improve air quality in your home by helping to remove moisture, cooking odours, chemicals and other indoor pollutants. Some windows are better for ventilation than others. For instance, casement windows can open all the way out to let in more air. In addition, placing windows on opposite walls will help create a breeze and improve airflow throughout your home.

3. Let the light in

Natural light can brighten up space and boost your mood. In addition, sunlight can help warm your home on cold winter days and potentially decrease your heating bills. For these reasons, it’s a good idea to add a source of natural light in every room.

4. Think about functionality

Let the purpose of a room inform how you place your windows. For instance, it might not make sense to install large windows in the dining room if it’s going to be used primarily in the evening when there’s less outdoor light coming in. Likewise, large windows aren’t the best choice for bathrooms where privacy is a concern. A skylight, however, is a great option for adding natural light to a room while maintaining privacy.

5. Accentuate your home’s unique style

Use a variety of window shapes and sizes to create visual interest. Consider investing in custom architectural windows to highlight the best features of your home.
