Heat transfer Obtaining a U-value involves a scientific calculation that measures the rate at which heat flows through one square foot of material. It measures how much warmth is transferred from its warm side to its cold side. U-values generally range from 0.20 to 1.20. A low value is given to windows that have higher levels of insulation and a slower transfer of heat. To better understand the U-value, you must also understand the R-value. Heat resistance An R-value is a measure of the thermal resistance of a material. It determines the ability of energy to move from hot areas to cold areas via the material being measured (such as insulation, walls, doors and windows). This value is based on how thick a material is and how well it resists heat flow. Materials with higher values are better at preventing heat transfer. Double and triple-pane windows have higher R-values than single-pane windows. Window glazing Many glazing options can improve the performance and energy efficiency of your windows. One option is low emissive or low-e glass. Emissivity refers to the ability to radiate energy. Low-e glass is glazed with a transparent coating that minimizes the ultraviolet and infrared light that enters your home. It reflects heat so it can’t escape during the winter and can’t enter during the summer. Low-e glass can dramatically lower a window’s U-value.
