Rocks

Rocks are one of the most common causes of chips and bullseyes in your windshield. Pebbles, gravel, and other debris can be flung up at your car by the tires of other vehicles on the road. There are a lot of different ways debris can cause damage to your auto glass. Fortunately, most rock chips are easy to repair. Just don’t wait until it starts to spread as a crack and you’ll need a full replacement instead.

Accidents

This one seems obvious. Getting into an accident can cause damage to your car’s windshield, right? While it’s true that bigger wrecks create obvious cracks, other accidents that don’t initially appear to cause damage to your auto glass can still have an impact. It may weaken and cause stress to your auto glass that won’t become apparent until later when stress fractures appear.

Weather

There are many ways in which the weather can cause damage to your windshield. In the cold winter months ice, snow, and hail can cause chips and cracks.

The low temperatures are not this issue as much as the rapid temperature changes that come from the cold weather. If you’re using your defroster or your car’s heating system, this can cause stress on the windshield due to the expansion and contraction of the glass. This process leads to stress fractures and cracks.

Additionally, ice and cold can make existing cracks much worse through that same process of expansion and contraction.
