WHICH MATERIAL SHOULD YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR FRONT DOOR: WOOD, STEEL OR FIBREGLASS?

Your front door is more than just an entryway into your home. It needs to be able to withstand rain, snow, wind and other weather conditions. It also needs to be able to keep potential intruders at bay.

There are many different styles and materials of door to choose from. However, you can’t go wrong with one made of steel, fibreglass or wood. Here’s what you should know about doors made from these specific materials. Steel Doors made of steel are an excellent choice if you’re on a budget, as they’re less expensive than fibreglass and wood varieties. They’re simple, inexpensive, durable and secure. They also provide a strong barrier against intruders. However, not all steel doors are made equally. The gauge, or thickness of the steel is an important consideration. In addition, they absorb the heat or cold of the outside environment and require an insulated core to help increase their energy efficiency. They’re also not as esthetically pleasing as wood doors and they tend to dent and scratch easily, which over time will result in rust. Fibreglass Doors made of fibreglass are an excellent choice if longevity is a priority. This composite material is sturdy, durable and resistant to cracking, fading and chipping. Fibreglass doors are manufactured with a dense layer of insulating foam in the centre, making them energy efficient. They’re also low maintenance and can last up to 20 years without requiring repairs, painting or adjustments. They’re customizable and available in a range of finishes. They can even be made to mimic the appearance of wood. Fibreglass is more expensive than steel but less expensive than wood. Wood Doors made of wood are an excellent choice for adding character and style to your home. Solid hardwood doors provide excellent insulation and are naturally energy efficient. Dents and scratches are easy to hide in the texture of the wood, making them relatively easy to repair. They do, however, require regular staining and refinishing. They’re also prone to warping and rotting in moist environments. Wood is the most expensive of the three materials. Material is only one factor in choosing the right door for your home. It’s also important to hire experienced technicians to install it.
