Tips to Get Your Windshield Ready for Summer

cleaning windshield glass

After months of driving through snow, ice and freezing rain, your car is due for some TLC before the summer weather arrives. A good place to start is your car’s auto glass and windshield. The windshield not only provides clear vision while driving, but it’s also vital to your vehicle’s structural stability. Here are some tips for preparing your windshield for summer.

Clean

Winter can leave caked-on muck, debris and stubborn residue on your auto glass. Remove it using a microfibre cloth. Use a new clean cloth to apply some rubbing alcohol to the glass. Then apply some window cleaner to the other side of the second cloth and rub the glass in a circular motion. Don’t use alcohol if you have after-market window tints, as it can remove the tint from the window.

Inspect and Repair

Now that the windshield is clean, inspect it for any cracks or chips you may not have noticed over winter. If you find any, get them repaired as soon as possible at a certified and reputable auto glass centre. Small cracks can quickly grow to impair your vision and make your car unsafe to drive. Cracks can also compromise the structural integrity of your car, as the windshield is safety-engineered to absorb a lot of the force in collisions and rollovers.

Most minor windshield damage can be quickly and inexpensively repaired with a machine that pumps transparent resin into the cracks. If the chip is too deep or the crack is too long, then you may need a windshield replacement. Most windshield replacements can be performed in one day.

Don’t Forget the Wipers

An integral part of your windshield is the wipers. You should replace your wiper blades once a year, and spring is the perfect time to do it. Harsh winter weather like freezing rain can turn the wiper blades’ soft rubber stiff and brittle. Old wiper blades will streak and jump over the glass, and you may not be able to see clearly during a summer rainstorm. Click here to learn more about choosing new wiper blades.

Additionally, ensure the wiper fluid reservoir is topped up. You no longer need the winter washer fluid designed to clear away ice and not freeze even in the coldest temperatures. Fill the reservoir with summer washer fluid containing more detergents to remove mud and insects from the windshield.
