French Doors vs. Sliding Doors: Choosing the Right Option for Your Space

When considering your options for patio doors, there are several different selections to choose from when you’re looking for door installation. The most common choices are sliding doors and French doors.

Each option presents different features and benefits. How do you decide which one is right for you? Read on as we explore each of these options.

French Doors

French doors are doors with glass panes that extend most of their length. They are often installed as a pair. Combined with the glass panes, this means you get a lot more natural light in your space.

French doors are perfect for warm summer days. They allow you to easily bring the outdoors inside, leaving the door open for a warm summer breeze.

They also give your room an aesthetic upgrade. Give a bland and beige room a visual upgrade by installing fancy new French doors.

Sliding Doors

Sliding doors are a common choice for patio doors.

One of the benefits of sliding doors is increased spatial comfort. Since they move down a track rather than opening into another area, they maximize the efficiency of your space. In smaller homes, such as apartments, this can be a big benefit.

Sliding doors allow a lot of natural light to enter the room, giving you a much brighter space.

Meanwhile, sliding doors have a wide range of aesthetics you can choose from. Frames can be powder-coated and customized to meet the aesthetics and décor of your home.

Comparing the Two

So which option is better? What option should you go with for door installation? That depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

If you have limited amounts of space, you may want to consider sliding doors regardless of other factors, as their space efficiency is extremely useful. However, it is important to remember that French doors can provide a larger opening, which makes it easier to move larger pieces of furniture into and out of the room.

While both options let in lots of light, patio sliding doors tend to allow just a little bit more due to their design. One thing about sliding doors that you might come across is that they don’t always match well with the aesthetics of older homes. French doors are a more traditional option and generally work better in these spaces.

Because sliding doors require a dedicated track to slide on, their threshold is a little higher. This may not seem like a big deal, but it can cause inconvenience at times.

On the other hand, hinged French doors are more vulnerable to being blown open or closed by winds, or being blocked by drifts of snow in the winter.
