A squeaky door in your home can wake you up in the middle of the night and disturb an otherwise peaceful day. If a noisy door has you riled, there’s a good chance you can probably repair it yourself. Here’s how to fix a squeaking door.

What Causes a Squeaky Door

Over the years, hinges on a residential door can come loose, causing the internal hinge pin to grind against the metal. This friction causes squeaking. Additionally, a door can begin sagging in its frame, causing the hinges to become misaligned. Whatever the cause, there’s probably no need to replace a squeaky door.

How To Fix a Squeaky Door

Repairing and lubricating a squeaky door hinge is a simple maintenance task that keeps your doors opening and closing with ease. Follow these steps to fix a squeaking door:

  1. Tighten the hinges. If you notice that the screws holding the hinges to the frame have come loose, tighten them with a screwdriver or power drill. That’ll keep the door snugly in the frame and may stop the squeaking.

  2. Remove the hinge pin. With a hammer and a screwdriver or nail, gently tap the hinge pin up through the hinge and remove it. Remove and reinsert one hinge at a time to prevent the door from falling over.

  3. Check the pin. If the hinge pin is bent, scratched or nicked, the damage could be the culprit. Try straightening the pin with a hammer or buy a new hinge pin to replace the bent one. Door companies that carry door hardware and accessories will have what you need.

  4. Clean and lubricate the pin. Over time, dirt and debris can collect around the hinge pin, making it squeak. Clean the pin and lubricate it with candle wax, white grease or lubricating jelly.

  5. Reinsert the pin. Once the pin is clean and lubricated, reinsert it into the hinge. Use a hammer to tap the pin into place gently. Repeat the process with the rest of the door hinges.

  6. Test the door. If the door continues to squeak, the door frame may be crooked or rotten. You may need a professional door installation company to repair it.
